MATCHA—it was love at first sip

MATCHA. Self-love in a warm, frothy mug. Grassy and earthy to the senses. Nourishing and warming to the body. In a world where wellness trends come and go, one vibrant green powerhouse has stood the test of time — Matcha. Derived from finely ground whole green tea leaves, this queen ingredient has become a beloved potion for well-being.

For me, matcha was the catalyst that kickstarted my self-healing journey several years ago. Yes, I got swept up in matcha madness, but once I started actually experiencing its tangible benefits (reduced cortisol spikes, better mood, increased focus, clearer skin), I delved into the roots of matcha, craving a connection beyond the cup.

history is good

I’m no matcha historian. I haven’t been to Japan to experience a matcha ceremony (yet). I don’t prepare my cup in the traditional way, but if I’m going to consume something on the daily, I like to get to know it a little better.

a few matcha History facts:

  1. While mostly associated with Japan, matcha is rooted in Chinese Zen philosophy a millennium ago. ANCIENT WISDOM

  2. Traditional matcha preparation was meant to be intentional, ritualistic and meditative. A daily lesson on being mindful and present. LOVE LOVE LOVE

  3. High-quality tea seeds made their way to Japan, where a focus on maximizing the health benefits during the growth process was part of the conversation. LOVE THIS CONVERSATION!

  4. While at first mostly consumed by the wealthy class, matcha gained popularity in the social class a few centuries later. I thought this was interesting. WELLNESS FOR ALL!

  5. The ceremony is meant to encourage present awareness—to appreciate the simple things, imperfections and all! MATCHA IS A WAY OF LIFE

benefits are good too

Sipping a cup of matcha goes beyond a mere beverage—it's an ancient ritual steeped in history and tradition, but the magic of matcha extends beyond its spiritual significance. Nature has endowed this queen with a plethora of health benefits, making it a holistic elixir for both body and mind.

a few matcha mind-body benefits:

  1. Full Spectrum Boost: Unlike regular green tea, matcha is derived from the whole green tea leaf, providing its full spectrum of benefits. A powerful nutrient boost in one cup!

  2. Antioxidant Powerhouse: Matcha is rich in antioxidants. These compounds help combat oxidative stress, supporting your body's defense against free radicals. Great for skin health!

  3. Immune System Support: Known for its medicinal properties, matcha is a formidable ally for your immune system. Regular consumption can help defend against illnesses. Stay well!

  4. Enhanced Focus and Concentration: The unique combination of L-theanine and caffeine in matcha promotes mental clarity, focus, and concentration. A natural way to sharpen your mind!

  5. Sustained Caffeine Energy: The caffeine in matcha is metabolized more slowly in the body compared to coffee. This prevents the cortisol spike, jitters, drop in blood sugar, and the typical caffeine crash, ensuring a more balanced and sustained energy experience. It feels like a peaceful climb, a sturdy plateau, then a cool descent as the day turns to dusk.

Making the switch from coffee to matcha has been a game-changer, particularly in alleviating my anxiety by addressing the mechanics of daily cortisol spikes. This shift allowed my nervous system to find some reprieve, creating space for healing to begin. With diminishing anxiety, my mood gradually brightened, providing the motivation I needed to propel my healing journey forward. All it took was that first Matcha sip.

Even more, I’ve made my Matcha morning ceremony part of my daily Ayurvedic practices. Embracing the ancient Japanese ritual of being present in the preparation and consumption of the tea is practicing Ayurveda. Receiving its healing benefits from nature is Ayurveda in action.

My love for matcha runs deep. I’m still always taking pictures of my morning cup, trying to get that perfect matcha shot when the froth hits just right. Matcha photographs well. She can’t help it!

MATCHA LOVE

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 - 1 tsp quality matcha (the amount depends on your caffeine tolerance. i’m a 1 tsp gal)

2 dates, roughly chopped (be sure to remove the pits) or 1 tsp date syrup

1 tbsp coconut butter or coconut powder

Dash of cardamom & cinnamon

2 cups hot water (not boiling!)

OPTIONAL:

1/2 tsp reishi mushroom powder (or any other adaptogen you love)

Scoop of collagen

Splash of seed, nut or dairy milk (i find the coconut butter is creamy enough)

TOOLS:

High-speed blender (if no blender, see note below)

Tea kettle or small sauce pot for heating water

Your favorite mug, the one that makes you most happy to sip from

METHOD:

1. In a tea kettle or sauce pot, heat 2 cups of filtered water to just before boiling (boiling water is harsh on the medicinal benefits of matcha)

2. While water warms up, add all ingredients to your blender. Add hot water and blend on hight for 45 sec to 1 minute.

3. Pour matcha goodness in your favorite mug and enjoy!

PRO TIP:

Let matcha mixture sit in blender for a minute or so. I find this helps the froth build. You want froth. Froth is good.

BLENDER ALTERNATIVE:

If you don’t have a blender, you can use a handheld electric milk frother. You won’t be able to blend the whole dates so use date syrup or choice of sweetener instead.

MINDFULNESS TIP:

If you have the time, sit down and enjoy your matcha without distraction. Keep the phone and laptop in another room. Read a book, journal or just sit outside with nature, even if that’s your concrete stoop. Relax the mind. When you relax the mind, the plant benefits work their magic more efficiently in the body. Safe to say we should do this when we eat our meals too!

MATCHA + THE AYURVEDA DOSHAS:

~ Can reduce Kapha from its bitter and stimulating qualities.

~ Can reduce Pitta as the caffeine is more gentle and Pittas will enjoy the added focus and energy. But Pittas, be careful with caffeine consumption. If you start to feel jittery or more anxious, eliminate for a period of time.

~ Caffeine in general can increase Vata so be very mindful with consumption. Same flag as Pittas.
